Carpet has been used successfully in and around raised floor environments for several decades. The first generation of carpeting was not the best for the equipment and caused particulate problems in sensitive environments. Anti-static carpet manufactured today uses the most advanced green mill methods which produces a far superior product, virtually eliminating all the old problems.
For many years, carpet was factory glued to raised floor panels. Because the backing was still jute based, the edges were trimmed and a small piece of edge trim was installed to protect the carpet from fraying. This was the industry standard for many years to carpet raised floor tiles. It was called "carpeted panels". The backing improved ever so slightly, which enabled manufacturers to permanently install a full size carpet on top of a bare steel panel. This was the first generation of monolithic panels, or landscaped panels. However this was still a very big problem. Every time a facility needed to swap out a panel, they had to purchase an entirely new panel. This was not cost effective, and forced our industry to solve this problem.
The backing on carpet improved, away from jute to plastics. The leading access floor manufacturer, Tate, teamed up with a major carpet company and created some solutions - magnetic tile, snap in tile, and 24" x 24" carpet tile that laid directly on top of the floor panel. These carpet tiles fit perfectly with no glue or an optional light tacky glue. A facility could swap out the carpet tile only or take off one piece of carpet tile (24" x 24") and then remove one raised floor panel. Also, the backing technology had improved to a point where fraying was not an issue anymore. This product soared in popularity in raised floor environments because it solved the glue problem, the fraying and ongoing maintenance problem. Customers could put carpet tiles on top of bare steel panels with or without adhesive.
This has been the practice in the industry for many years. It offers a facility a way to rotate carpet tiles for even wear, and replace individual pieces as necessary for further savings on replacement and maintenance costs. In addition, the carpet tile being manufactured today is durable, attractive, low-maintenance, and features conductive elements built into yarn fibers that are tufted into a conductive backing material for permanent static control performance. This can be a critical factor in a data center or office environment.
With the push to greener practices and environments, we no longer recommend our customers to use strong adhesives and create a non sustainable product. We recommend a 100% recyclable product that meets current industry practices - bare panels with carpet tile.
